Little Willie John is a soul singer from the mid 50's and early 60's and is often (and rightfully) placed within the ranks of singers like James Brown, Sam Cooke, and Ray Charles. He was only 18 when he recorded his first hit, "All Around the World," but he sounds closer to 30. He's recognized as the first person to record "Fever" (1956). Unfortunately John was convicted of manslaughter and sent to the prison where he would die in 1968, due to the fatal ending of a confrontation between John and ex-convict Kevin Roundtree over a seat that Roundtree stole from Willie's date at an after party in Seattle. His death has been attributed to pneumonia as well as heart attack, but it remains unclear what actually happened.
