Zu - Carboniferous

As I was looking through all the albums of 2009 and considering what would be in my top 5 ,I couldn't believe that one of my top picks was never posted. Zu is an avant-garde jazz meets metal group out of Italy. Their base set-up is a sax, bassist, and drummer; but all of there albums have a good amount of contributors. On this album King Buzzo of The Melvins and Mike Patton step up. This collaboration is a great choice as King Buzzo leads Zu into some doom-esque territory, while Patton does his best to make shit just generally weirder. This band seems to effortlessly break any attempts of easy genre classification on each song. They play around with shifting time signatures and let their free jazz scream before driving into a hell bent noise rock escapade that brings even Lightning Bolt to mind. Rock on Zu.
Track Picks: Soulympics, Chthonian

P.S. I'm still working on a best of the year list, which I'll most likely eventually post.
