Agalloch - Ashes Against The Grain

It took me awhile to get into this album, beware whispered folk growls are ahead. If you can get past the cliched black metal approach to vocals then you can get to whats so rewarding about this album. This album has slowly become one of my favorite post-metal offerings, and that's saying a lot when you consider the amount of bands that slap that label on. No one fuses the fury of black metal so well with the dynamics of post-rock like these guys based out of (surprisingly not Norway) Portland, OR. There's a bit of everything here, not just constant tsunami like waves of guitars. They add quite a bit of atmospheric aspects and though not as apparent on this album, have some interesting neo-folk bits. Oh and you can leave the characteristically thin production qualities at home, this album has a fully fleshed out sound. Fucking epic.
