Somehow amongst all the forward thinking movements in jazz made in the mid 50's through the 60's Cecil Taylor was overshadowed, even with his steady output of work throughout the changes being made in the scene. The Year was 1966 and Unit Structures would be the first of two albums released that year for the Blue Note Label. Not only was Unit Structures his fist chance to record in around three years it was a return to Blue Note, His last recording for them being the 1956 release Jazz Advance . This gave Taylor a chance to say something new with his music. He took this chance to mix the popularity of atonalism in free jazz movements of the time with facets of structured improvisation. The results being a breakthrough work for avant-garde jazz as a whole.
